EMPOWERING THE YOUTH ON CAREER CHOICES
Many youth in our country today continue to face challenges with employment in various sectors of the economy. In this regard, a career counseling and coaching seminar was organized by Mr. Carl Odame-Gyenti of Barclays Bank Ghana, for Junior High School (JHS) students of Kutunse Municipal Assembly (M/A) 1 & 2, on the 10th of November, 2016 at the Church of Pentecost, Kutunse Assembly Auditorium.
In a key note address, Mr. Gyamfi stressed that, the career development session had come at the right time, and in line with the schools’ objective of hosting series of such programmes to bridge the knowledge gap between school and work. He believed the event would go a long way in helping the students identify their interests and optimize the opportunities presented to them.
Addressing the students, the organizer and speaker of the event, Mr. Carl Odame Gyenti, gave an overview of Ghana`s educational system, the qualifications, cutoff points and admission requirements for Senior High School, various Polytechnics, Universities, as well as Vocational and Technical institutions.
He also helped the students to determine their career interests by using RIASEC tests. It covered Realistic (Mechanical careers), Investigative (Technical/Science Careers), Artistic (Creative/Artistic Careers), Social (Social Service/People) Oriented Careers, Enterprising (Business and Sales-Oriented Careers) and Conventional (Office-based or Financial-oriented Careers).
He stated that each student’s personality trait and values has a significant impact on the career choices they make. “It is never too early to start thinking about the future. What you are doing in school now will have an impact on what you will do in the future,” He added.
During the interactive section, the students asked lots of questions regarding career planning, the effect of having multiple careers, and how to fully tap into their potentials. One of the pupils said, she had great interest in fashion design, but her parents thought it wasn’t profitable enough.
Mr. Odame-Gyenti replied, “It’s a joy to know you have discovered your interest early. I am particularly excited that you have shared it with your parents. For now, concentrate on excelling in your BECE, and continue to Senior High School. Afterwards, you can enroll in a good school, which offer courses in fashion designing with the help of God and your parents. I believe there is still hope.”
This community-driven initiative is part of Mr. Carl Odame-Gyenti’s annual working leave initiative to give back to the community. He selected the school to host the career development and coaching seminar with the JHS student body. The objective of the event was to equip students with necessary career choices as they prepare to climb the academic ladder, and also relate their studies to future careers. His aim is to support students in their aspiration to become next generational leaders.
